Your AI travel buddy

The challenge

Flanders has an incredible amount to offer, which is why millions of tourists visit our country every year. But a region overflowing with sights, activities, and beautiful places presents a challenge: how do you make the most of your visit to Flanders?

AI as your travel buddy

Discovering new cultures, exploring a region’s must-sees, and meeting people from all over the world… there’s hardly anything not to love about travelling. Except, perhaps, for the part that comes before the actual trip. Because behind every getaway, weekend escape, or grand adventure lies the not-so-glamorous task of planning it all. Finding the best spots, curating fun activities, juggling everyone’s preferences, the weather, the season: it can be a real headache. And yet, Flanders is absolutely worth exploring. As Visit Flanders puts it perfectly on their website: “Flanders. A region packed with history, heritage and arts.” In other words: there’s a lot to see and do.

Which also means: where do you even start?

That’s exactly where Visit Flanders steps in with a clever solution: an AI-powered travel guide we created for them. With just a few clicks, it suggests tailor-made places, activities, and sights that fit your interests like a glove. Visitors get the right local content - at the right moment, in the right language, and perfectly aligned with what they care about. That way, they can experience Flanders in the best possible way: effortlessly.

Under the hood: how does it work?

So how does this travel guide actually work behind the scenes? Before it ever appeared on the website, quite a bit of AI magic had already taken place. The system goes through a multi-step process:

  • First, Visit Flanders created a preselected Excel list with relevant web pages. Think chocolatiers in Bruges or Ghent, breweries in Antwerp, cycling tours in Leuven, and so on.
  • This curated list is automatically crawled, after which an AI model (GPT-4o) gets to work generating a whole bunch of data for the pages: it comes up with a fitting title for the activity, writes a short description in six languages (Dutch, French, English, German, Spanish, and Italian), and immediately assigns the right tags — from beer and food to art, sports, and nature.
  • On top of that, the system captures all the practical details: is it a one-time event or a permanent activity, do you need a ticket, is it accessible, where is it located…

All that information is then stored in a central database — the beating heart of this personalized travel guide. When visitors use the guide, there’s no AI involved anymore. Everything has already been preprocessed. And there’s a good reason for that:

  • First of all, results are displayed much faster, since they’re pulled directly from the database. Preprocessed data ensures near-instant responses and a smoother experience.
  • Secondly, the results shown to different visitors will not only be more consistent, they’ll also be easier to explain.
  • Finally, no user preferences are sent to the cloud-based LLM provider. By keeping all data processing local, you minimize data exposure and eliminate the risk of personal information leaking to third parties.

Getting the best of our Flanders

With just a few clicks, visitors get a diverse range of handpicked activities, sights, and locations: a tailor-made way to experience the very best of Flanders.

And the numbers don’t lie: it’s clearly a winning formula. In a couple of months, the guide has already been used more than 10,000 times. The top seven countries are as follows: Belgium (though this should be qualified, since visitors from different language backgrounds within Belgium use the guide, including international tourists already in Flanders), Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the UK, and Spain.

The Visit Flanders travel guide proves that AI doesn’t need to be flashy or visible to make an impact. By using it smartly behind the scenes, Visit Flanders elevates the quality and relevance of its digital offering… without users having to lift a finger.
